Looker Studio Training: Business Dashboards, Data Blending and Insight

Move beyond decorative charts to build dashboards that answer genuine business questions. This program covers data modelling assumptions, calculated fields, blends, interactive controls and the communication of insight.

Who this training is designed for

Designed for analysts, marketing teams, reporting specialists, BI professionals and academic cohorts working with tabular data.

  • BI and digital analysts using multiple data sources
  • Marketing teams creating recurring performance reports
  • Learners practising business intelligence and reporting

Learning objectives

Participants learn to plan dashboard questions, validate data definitions and make reporting useful to decision-makers.

  • Build an interpretable multi-page dashboard
  • Create calculations and apply appropriate filters
  • Diagnose common data blending and reconciliation issues

Module 1 — Dashboard requirements

Translate stakeholder questions into definitions, granularity and reporting views.

  • KPI definitions
  • Dimensions, metrics and grain
  • Chart choice and information hierarchy

Module 2 — Data sources and quality

Connect representative sources and identify assumptions.

  • Source types and credentials
  • Data quality checks
  • Date dimensions and aggregation

Module 3 — Calculated fields and controls

Create reusable measures and useful interactive experiences.

  • Calculated dimensions and metrics
  • Filters and date range controls
  • Parameters where appropriate

Module 4 — Blended data

Understand joins, keys, data grain, mismatches and resulting metric behaviour.

  • Join keys and cardinality
  • Left joins and aggregation effects
  • Validation with independent totals

Module 5 — Storytelling and governance

Design dashboards that remain interpretable over time.

  • Executive summaries and drill-downs
  • Visual accessibility and performance
  • Sharing permissions and upkeep

Tools, practice and assessment

Looker Studio, Google Sheets and representative CSV data are typical. Some connectors may involve separate vendor charges and are not included by default.

Participants build a multi-source marketing dashboard, validate a blended metric and document at least three business insights.

An independent dashboard exercise evaluates correctness, clarity, interaction and the defensibility of conclusions.

Delivery and customisation

Available as a focused workshop or multi-day hands-on program for beginner to intermediate and analyst audiences.

Datasets, KPIs and complexity can be adjusted for marketing operations, sales enablement or academic analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Is the program suitable for experienced BI analysts?
— Yes. More advanced tracks emphasise blending, reconciliation, calculated fields and insight generation.

Must we use live corporate data?
— No. Synthetic or approved datasets are suitable for practical labs.

Does Looker Studio replace a data warehouse?
— No. Creating a Dashboard using BI tool and deeper data engineering serve different functions; data modelling boundaries are discussed.

Illustrative multi-table dashboard lab

Learners receive separate campaign, performance and customer-category tables sharing documented keys. Before joining, they inspect grain and relationship assumptions, note missing values and calculate independent control totals.

They create a blended view, compare it with source totals, explain differences and build an executive-facing dashboard with a concise findings section. This makes the exercise more meaningful than decorating already-perfect data.
